ADSL (Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line) is an Internet access technology that makes use of Telkom’s existing
copper telephone network to provide broadband Internet, VOIP and other online services
to homes and businesses. At the present time, ADSL is the most popular high-speed
Internet access technology for home and businesses in many parts of the world offering
access speeds of up to 30 times faster than a 56k dial-up connection.
The Vox ADSL packages are Ideal for internet surfing and email access as well as
use with the Vox VOIP phone.
Our packages are all 1GB and allow you to set your limit wherever you choose and
only pay for what you use.
e.g if you set your limit to 5GB and use only 3.6GB in total, we will only bill
you for an additional 3GB over your 1GB package not the full 5GB!
Gold (Shaped)
Shaped - Telkom "shape" the ports to throttle downloads, peer to peer traffic and
other bandwidth intensive applications which enable them to share the solution with
more users.
- The most commonly used and cost effective ADSL option
Platinum (Unshaped)
Unshaped - No Port Shaping Restrictions are applied by Telkom- enabling FASTER DOWNLOAD
times. The solution is shared with less people. makes surfing the Internet a pleasure.
- The rolls Royce of ADSL options
Bronze (Local Only)
Excludes expensive International bandwidth but still allows access to local content
such as email etc.
- Offers no international web browsing ideal if you use the Vox phone for calls only
High Speed access
ADSL is a broadband service. It offers data transmission at much greater speeds
and capacity than narrowband services like ISDN and dial-up analog modems.
Always-On Connection
ADSL is an "always on" service that does not require you to dial-up. Your
connection is always available giving to immediate access to the online world.
VOIP
ADSL Services are used with Vox Telecoms consumer VOIP solutions saving you money
on your national and international call charges. You can also remain online and
surf at the same time
The Vox ADSL
products offer you simple and affordable options to get connected to the faster
growing VOIP community in South Africa.
- 1GB of data access (additional bandwidth available)
- Online Stats
- Online bandwidth limit control
- 24/7 Support Centre
Service
The ADSL service operates over a single, unconditioned twisted copper pair of wires.
Its connection is between modem pairs, one at the user end and the second at the
Telkom Exchange. The ADSL service is operated in conjunction with the existing Plain
Old Telephone Service (POTS). Telephony signals and ADSL signals are separated and
combined by the POTS splitters, one at the Exchange and one at the subscriber 's
location.
Line Speeds:
ADSL can transmit up to 6Mbps, however only the following options are available:
- 384K (Fast DSL)
- 512K (Faster DSL)
- 4Mbps (Fastest DSL)
Limitations:
ADSL access is distance-sensitive. The connection speed depends on several factors:
- distance between the subscriber and the Exchange
- speed increases with copper wire line diameter
- presence of bridge taps - bridge taps are extensions, between the subscriber and
the Exchange, that extend service to other subscrib ers. Bridge taps may increase
the distance limit but slow down the access speed
Shaped VS Unshaped Bandwidth:
Shaped Bandwidth (Most popular), or Shaping is the act of giving one protocol (e.g.
email or webpage traffic) a higher priority over another (e.g. Peer to peer applications),
this gives users that require only basic internet and email access a more bandwidth
than the bandwidth hungry applications such as P2P, online gaming etc.
Unshaped is the opposite of Shaped, where no protocol Prioritization is given allowing
full bandwidth to any application that requires it, ideal for online gaming, trading
etc.
